As a Character Art Outsource Specialist, you will be responsible for managing the outsourcing process of character art assets, like armor and accessories, by supporting and advocating the game's art direction and goals to external studios. In other words, you will help ensure the delivery of high-quality art from external vendors which conforms to our artistic vision and technical requirements.

Additionally, you will help oversee the integration process of the character models into the game engine, to add things like shader materials and glows, which all combine to create the final look of the character art. If this role speaks to you, we are right there with you - it's what drives us every day. Give us a shout, we want to hear from you!

  • Collaborate with the Art Leads, Art Directors, Technical Artists and Concept Artists to understand and communicate the artistic vision, style, and technical specifications for characters in the game.
  • Partner with other disciplines (including Producers, 3D Modelers, Technical Artists, Concept Artists, and VFX Artists), to help define and communicate the scope of work for character art outsourcing tasks.
  • Oversee the outsourcing of character art assets through all stages of development, including block-out, high and low poly modeling, texturing, and integration.
  • Follow the ExDev teams' review process to provide ongoing, timely, clear, and concise feedback to our ExDev partners who are working on art assets, to ensure their work achieves the project's artistic and technical goals while keeping to a schedule.
  • Update the task status for each asset as they progress through the art pipeline, to ensure accurate tracking and alignment with project schedules.
  • Help document and facilitate the 3D Character workflow between ExDev and in-house.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, tools, and techniques related to character art in video games. Provide guidance and support to vendors in implementing optimal workflows, file formats, and technical requirements for character art production.
  • Create and/or modify existing assets, as necessary.

  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, character design, organic and hard surface modeling techniques, and PBR texturing and shading methods.
  • Expert knowledge of Maya, Substance Painter, Zbrush Marmoset Toolbag, and Photoshop.
  • Portfolio showcasing exceptional character design and art skills and a proficiency with high to low poly modeling pipelines.
  • Keen eye for detail and quality, and the ability to identify and address potential issues or improvements within character art assets.
  • Ability to provide clear artistic direction, feedback, and constructive criticism to maintain visual consistency and quality standards.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to articulate clearly to others verbally, through writing, and with images, to provide guidance and feedback while being professional and diplomatic.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team environment, fostering positive relationships and promoting a culture of creativity, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Outstanding ability to problem-solve and drive creative solutions.
  • Task driven, self-motivated, and proactive.

  • An understanding and passion for graphic design and fashion design as they relate to character art in video games.
  • The ability to align with multiple different art styles is highly desirable.
  • A passion and knowledge for video games, and the gaming industry and/ or experience in character art production, outsourcing, or related roles within the video game industry.
